Exhibition hall
The exhibition hall plays a central role for industrial companies that want to present their products, innovations and services to a wide audience. A well-planned and optimally utilised exhibition hall can not only serve as a platform for presentation, but also as an important meeting point for exchanging ideas with customers, partners and interested parties. In this article, we look at the key aspects of exhibition halls - from their definition and function to the special requirements and trends that companies should be aware of.
What is a typical exhibition hall?
An exhibition hall is a specially conceived and designed space that is primarily used to present products, services or works of art. In contrast to a showroom, which often serves more as a permanent presentation area, exhibition halls are often intended for temporary exhibitions, trade fairs or special events. In our example, our client Meplan requested a representative exhibition hall for the DOOSAN company for the outdoor area of the world's largest construction machinery trade fair BAUMA. Typical features of an exhibition hall are spacious, open areas, a flexible interior design and equipment that is tailored to the specific needs of the exhibition. In addition, the exhibition areas are seen as an important addition to the large construction machinery and equipment surrounding the exhibition hall.
What is the aim of an exhibition hall?
The exhibitor's main objective for an exhibition hall was to create an environment that allowed for the best possible presentation of machinery and equipment, etc. The focus here is on optimising staging. The focus here is on optimum staging - be it through ingenious lighting concepts, strategically placed exhibits or well thought-out visitor guidance. In addition to the presentation, the exhibition hall also serves as a platform for interaction and networking. Companies can make targeted contact with potential customers, business partners and industry experts here in order to strengthen their market position and open up new business opportunities.
Focussing on the needs of customers
For companies, the exhibition hall is an indispensable tool for branding and market positioning. Especially in industries such as mechanical engineering, automotive or chemicals, it is essential to present innovations and new products in an appropriate setting.
Our customers expect an informative and appealing presentation that enables them to understand how the products work and their benefits. Trade fair staff are looking for opportunities to hold in-depth discussions and expand their networks in a professional environment. It is therefore important for companies that their exhibition hall is not only functional, but also representative and inviting.
What equipment is required?
In addition to a high-quality hall structure, a well-equipped exhibition hall should have various technical and infrastructural facilities. These include, among other things
- Lighting: Flexible and powerful lighting is essential to show exhibits in the right light. Different light sources and lighting concepts can be customised depending on the type of exhibition and the desired atmosphere.
- Air conditioning: Efficient air conditioning is essential to create a pleasant environment for visitors and exhibits. This applies in particular to sensitive products or materials that require stable temperature and humidity conditions.
- Technical infrastructure: Modern exhibition halls must have extensive technical equipment. This includes an adequate power supply, WLAN and internet access as well as audiovisual technology for presentations, lectures or interactive installations. As a rule, this is of course provided by the exhibition service at trade fair events.
- Security: The security of the exhibition hall is of the utmost importance. In addition to fire protection equipment and emergency exits, surveillance and alarm systems as well as access controls should also be in place to protect exhibits and visitors.
Security in exhibition halls - what needs to be considered?
Security in exhibition halls encompasses various aspects that need to be taken into account both structurally and organisationally. Fire protection is a key issue. This includes not only the installation of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, but also the maintenance of escape and rescue routes that can be used quickly and safely in an emergency. The rules of the trade fair organiser must be adhered to.
Structural safety also plays an important role. Exhibition halls must be stable and resistant to external influences. Even if they ‘only stand for a few days’ - they are still located outside and are not spared the effects of the weather.

Environmental aspects of exhibition halls
Of course, sustainability and environmental protection also play a role at trade fairs and other events. These aspects should also be taken into account when building and operating exhibition halls. Energy-efficient lighting systems, the use of sustainable materials (tent and tarpaulin structures can be reused and recycled several times) and environmentally friendly air conditioning are just a few examples of measures that can leave a positive ecological footprint.
Factors in the utilisation of exhibition halls
The success of an exhibition hall depends on various factors. A well thought-out marketing strategy and targeted promotion can help to attract the attention of potential visitors and increase visitor numbers. Customer satisfaction also plays an important role. We recommend considering factors such as a pleasant ambience, clear visitor guidance and an appealing presentation of the exhibits to ensure that visitors have a positive experience and receive the most authentic brand experience possible.
Exhibition hall or showroom - what are the differences?
The terms exhibition hall and showroom are often used interchangeably, but there are significant differences. While an exhibition hall is generally designed for temporary events and offers space for a variety of exhibits and exhibitor services (e.g. catering zones, meeting zones, live demonstrations, reception and lounge), a showroom is usually used for the permanent presentation of selected products. Exhibition halls are often larger and more flexible in their design in order to fulfil different requirements. A showroom, on the other hand, is usually permanently furnished and designed for the continuous presentation of a brand or product line.
While the exhibition hall is primarily suitable for large events and trade fairs, the showroom offers a longer-term opportunity for customer contact and brand presentation.
Future trends in exhibition halls
The digital transformation does not stop at exhibition halls. Smart buildings, the integration of IoT technologies and the use of virtual and augmented reality are also possible in exhibition halls with tent and hall structures. The indoor climate can be positively influenced by different materials so that all new technologies can be utilised. These trends will certainly have a significant impact on the design and utilisation of exhibition halls in the coming years and open up exciting new perspectives for companies' presentations.
